Role of the Lieutenant Governor
Canada is a parliamentary democracy with a constitutional monarchy.
Our system of government is based on the British parliamentary model,
but has been adapted to suit our own needs. Canada’s
Constitution recognizes The Queen as our Head of State. The
Lieutenant Governor represents The Queen in the Province of Saskatchewan.
The Lieutenant Governor plays an important
role as the representative of the Head of State, reading the Speech from the Throne, formally
appointing Premiers and Cabinet Ministers, opening and proroguing
(closing) Legislative Sessions, approving legislation, and bestowing
honours.
In addition to constitutional duties, the Lieutenant Governor is
involved with many organizations in the role of honourary patron.
The Lieutenant Governor attends hundreds of events each year
and receives diplomatic visitors.
